Mvula expresses a point.Welcome to Mvula Part II.  How westerners should get on with Africans, when in Africa?  We asked Mvula for his advice.

He replied, professional skills are of interest, but personal friendship is the key. He stressed - make good friends of your colleagues, and your time in the African church will be close. The way things are done certainly is different. It certainly isn’t a round of get-to-know-you dinner parties! It’s more a case of neighbours turning up at the door to give you fruit. They sense how far you will welcome them into the house. In a way, is this so far from UK? When neighbours moved into the house next to us in October 2007, did we not give them “welcome” jars of homemade jam, and later lend them DIY tools?

Mvula in discussion with WandaThis is the first time we have met anyone that shares Bill’s Birthday, but we have done so, here at Redcliffe College. Mvula January Mvula (born in August - long story for another time). Mvula comes from Malawi, a long thin country in Eastern Africa. We interviewed him for our Blog, so you too could know more about Africa - a big big place that’s much more than just about famines and dictators.

Missionaries to a Christian Country. Eh? 28 April 2008

Brothers & Sisters in Christ“Uganda is a Christian country, so why go there as missionaries?” Tricky question. For starters - can a country be “Christian”? And the word “missionary”. It is so burdened by history as to be best left in history. Yet the basic question remains. Why go from a country that currently recognised so little of the love of God (UK) to work in a country that knows much much more of the love of God (Uganda)?
