- Children at school, no uniforms, no shoes
Well, you don’t have to go a long way out of Kisiizi before things become very threadbare indeed.
Schools are scattered across the hills all around. Out of view among the hillside, unseen until you are on top of them. The objective of visiting the schools was to test salt for their Iodine content as part of an initiative to reduce iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). IDD can lead to a lower IQ, and mental retardation.

- Wanda sets off in the Suzuki
As you know, Wanda is starting a community health programme. This is an extension to the existing Government funded Primary Health Care program, and has the full agreement of Dr Tonny, the Medical Superintendent, and Dr Patrick, the Sub-County Primary Health Care Medical Officer. The first task has been to organize the repairs of a public health vehicle which is at least 20 years old and has remained broken and unused for two years.

Money is always a problem
question turned out to be a sad tale. People borrow money from banks to, say, meet school fees or medical bills, or to buy tin roofing for their houses. They use borrowings to meet shorter term cash flow needs, rather than long term issues like buying land or building houses. Because there is no nationwide system of credit referencing, the banks require the borrower to get two friends to stand as a personal guarantor. This is was what had happened. Jon became a guarantor for a friend. While this is something we’d rarely do in England, here it is common. And the sense of social obligation to people you know is still high.
