No, not the last minute shopping, but the rush that we do things round here in rural Uganda. For affinaciados of Just-In-Time, that it how it’s done, everything in the last week. Both of us also volunteered to assist in a daily speaking series on the wards for Christmas week. (more…)

Being abroad at Christmas helps one to think about it with fresh eyes.

Wanda Meets Christmas Dinner
Things gear up for Christmas, but only in the few days before. No decorations in the shops. “Shops”, is a euphemism for local shacks selling things, though it is surprising how much they do sell. Planning for the staff Christmas party only started on 17th. There were hardly any Christmas cards, and those that existed were sent from UK. After all, Christmas cards cost a lot of money relative to incomes here (not that cheap in UK either). There was quite a bit of carol singing in daily Chapel. Usually English Carols, translated into Ruchiga, with English tunes often. However, these carols have a very different rhythm become something quite unlike their English versions.

It is a nice picture isn’t it? Father looking lovingly his new baby. Baby staring intensely at dad. Did Joseph and Jesus look at each other in the same way? Very likely. Joseph would have had the encouragement of the shepherds and funding from the wise men. This man has the encouragement of the Hospital staff and the funding behind them from the wise persons in UK and elsewhere.
